New Cabinets Are Expensive. Painted Cabinets Can Look Just as Good.

Here's something most Geneseo homeowners figure out pretty quickly when they start pricing a kitchen update: new cabinets are shockingly expensive. We're talking tens of thousands of dollars, plus demolition, plus installation, plus weeks of your kitchen being torn apart. For a lot of people, that's just not realistic, especially when the cabinets themselves are structurally fine. They just look dated.

That's where cabinet painting comes in. If your boxes, doors, and drawers are still solid, a professional paint job can completely change the feel of your kitchen for a fraction of the replacement cost. We're not talking about a weekend DIY project with a foam roller, either. Done right, cabinet painting involves proper cleaning, sanding, priming, and multiple coats of durable finish that can stand up to grease, moisture, and the general wear and tear of a busy kitchen.

MLZ Glass, Painting, and Wallcoverings has been doing this kind of detail work for over 30 years. We're based in Rochester and serve homeowners throughout the greater Rochester area, including Geneseo and the surrounding Livingston County communities.

What Goes Into a Professional Cabinet Paint Job

Cabinet painting isn't the same as painting a bedroom wall. Cabinets get touched constantly, splashed with water, hit with cooking grease, and slammed shut by kids who are late for school. The finish needs to be tough enough to handle all of that without chipping or peeling after a few months.

Here's what our process typically looks like:

  • Thorough cleaning and degreasing. Kitchen cabinets collect a layer of grime you can't always see. If you paint over it, the paint won't stick. We start by cleaning every surface so the primer has something solid to bond to.
  • Sanding and scuffing. Whether your cabinets are stained wood, laminate, or previously painted, we sand them down to create the right surface for adhesion. This step is boring and time-consuming, and it's also the reason professional results last longer than DIY attempts.
  • Priming. A quality primer designed for cabinetry makes the topcoat more durable and helps prevent tannin bleed from wood knots showing through lighter colors.
  • Multiple finish coats. We apply thin, even coats and allow proper drying time between each one. Rushing this part is how you end up with drips, brush marks, and a finish that looks homemade.
  • Reassembly and final touch-ups. Once everything is dry and cured, we reinstall doors, drawers, and hardware, then do a careful walkthrough to catch any spots that need attention.

The whole process takes longer than most people expect, but that's a good thing. Cutting corners on cabinet painting always shows within a year or two.

Why Geneseo Homeowners Choose Cabinet Painting

Geneseo has a great mix of housing. You'll find everything from older homes near Main Street and the SUNY campus to newer builds out toward Lakeville and Lima. In the older homes especially, kitchens tend to have solid wood cabinets that were built to last but styled for a different decade. Dark oak from the '90s, honey maple from the early 2000s. Structurally great, visually tired.

Painting those cabinets white, off-white, or a modern gray-green can make the whole kitchen feel brighter and more current without gutting anything. It's one of the highest-impact, lowest-disruption updates you can make. And if you're thinking about selling at some point, a clean, updated kitchen makes a real difference to buyers.

For newer homes with builder-grade cabinets, painting is also a smart move. Those cabinets are often a flat, generic color that doesn't reflect the homeowner's style. A custom color can make a cookie-cutter kitchen feel more personal.

Beyond the Kitchen

When people hear "cabinet painting," they usually picture kitchen cabinets. But we handle bathroom vanities, built-in bookshelves, laundry room cabinetry, and other built-in storage too. The same prep and finishing process applies. If it has doors, drawers, or shelves and it's looking rough, we can make it look new again.

We also handle full interior painting if you're thinking about updating more than just the cabinets. A lot of our Geneseo clients start with cabinets and then decide to repaint the kitchen walls to match. That kind of combined project is easy to coordinate when the same crew is handling both. And if your home's outside could use some attention too, we offer exterior painting services for homes in the area.
